De Kelders and its spectacular coastline

De Kelders is a stunning area overlooking Walker bay, home of the Southern Right Whale for 6 months of the year. It is a secret destination for many who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the tourism market. De Kelders is not well known but well seen as it is across Walker Bay opposite Hermanus. Hermanus is famed for its population of Whales and its superior land based Whale watching but let me tell you a secret. De Kelders is the supreme location for Whale Watching in the world and that is no idle boast! What is better is that it is quiet, relaxing and 100% natural. You just simply drive or walk along the coastline of De Kelders and look out for a Whale or Whales sitting just off the rocks. Then pull over and stroll through the rock formations to the waterfront and share an intimate moment with this massive creature. It is not uncommon to see between 6 and 14 whales lying in the water sun baking on a warm winters day, with the stunning backdrop of 'The Plaat' beach.

What to do in De Kelders

Walk kilometers of coastline trails

De Kelders and the surrounding area is blessed with stunning coastline trails and beautiful rock formations which are fun to explore. Take long walks along the coast whilst watching the Humpback and Southern Right Whales play only yards away. The walks usually take all day as it is very difficult to keep walking when a Southern Right Whale is waving at you for attention.

Explore the rock pools

There are endless amounts of rock pools along the coast to explore which are full of life. There are many safe rock pools along the coastline for children to play in safely and De Kelders also boasts a tidal pool for safe swimming.

Fishing

Fishing can be enjoyed by everyone! Everyone can have a go from throwing a cheap hand held line into a rock pool to casting into the surf on 'The Plaat' beach. It is extremely easy to catch fish from the rock pools. Just pop along to the fishing shop and buy a cheap R7 line then pick some Periwinkles from the rock pools off the rocks for bait.

Whale Watching

Whale watching in De Kelders is easy to explain, it is simply the best! Lets just say that this morning we drove to the bottom of the road and saw 6 whales playing 30 yards from the rocks. The reason why we didn't see them yesterday was because we didn't go out! Unless the weather is horrendous then it is a guarantee that you will see a Whale during the day close to the shore of De Kelders between June and December. Hermanus is famous for its Whales and boasts to be the number one land based Whale watching location in the world. The Hermanus tourism bureau when asked said that they are not shy to tell people that De Kelders is the place to go if Whales can not be seen in Hermanus.

House Hunting

De Kelders is a special place and its property and land is increasing in price and demand. When people come to the area they ask whether something is wrong with the area as so many houses and plots are for sale. Our response is "Do you like De Kelders?" Many of our our guests go away seriously considering buying land or a house here. Buying a house or a decent plot is a good investment if you have the money. Last year plots on the seafront were between R500,000 and R750,000. Now you will struggle to buy a seafront plot for under R1 Million. The beauty of the De Kelders coastline apart from the Whales is the view. Hermanus beachfront is very exclusive but when looking out all you can see is Gansbaai and the Plaat beach. De Kelders has a view of Hermanus, Betty's bay, Hangklip and Cape Point. What more would you want for a view?

Explore the Caves

De Kelders is well known for having the only fresh water caves on Africa's coastline. The Klipgat caves are also famous for providing evidence of supporting Middle Stone Age people dating back 80,000 years. Even if you are not interested in historical landmarks the caves are fun to explore and provide for stunning views of the ocean from inside the caves. Duiwelsgat is a part of a cave which fell in, it looks like a deep hole which falls into the ocean. There is a small wall surrounding the hole protecting hikers from falling in. For a better view of the hole you can climb down into the cave and look up from the rocks and small beach underneath.
